Jot Fau est une artiste multiple. En raison de la diversité des matériaux et des techniques qu’elle emploie mais aussi en vue du développement de sa pratique intime et poétique qui traduit une fascination pour

l’appropriation de rôles et de terrains multiples et inconnus.

Pour cette exposition au Brussels Art Department, elle présentera ce qu’elle nomme des résidus de ses différentes incarnations. Il s’agit d’une sélection d’objets et d’images issus des projets Métamorphoses (2011), Veronica Ackerfeldt (2011), The Hunters Project (2012), The Singers Project (2013) et The loner (2015).

Cette exposition marque l’anniversaire d’un départ. D’un moi, il y a dix ans.

Ce départ était une nécessité. Et donc ce qui se rapprochait le plus de la notion de confort. Non pas vraiment parce que j’étais en conflit avec mon entourage, ou avec la langue que je parlais. Le conflit se trouvait

au sein de mon corps même.

Contrairement à ce qu’on attendait de moi, la formation du moi n’était pas terminée et, plus tard, j’ai compris qu’elle ne devait jamais se terminer.

Comme un reptile il a fallu muer maintes fois. Comme un animal j’ai survécu en observant, en suivant mon instinct et en m’adaptant, sans cesse.

Plus que tout je suis devenue étrangère. Étrangère toujours, mais très légèrement chez moi, quel que soit le terrain. La perspective de l’étranger est belle, elle est distincte et elle implique l’apprentissage.

L’apprentissage de langues car le langage – quel que soit sa nature – est un pont. Entre soi et les autres, entre le soi aujourd’hui et le soi de demain. L’apprentissage est l’essence du devenir, l’essence de l’être.

J’ai développé une pratique qui met en avant ces questions du devenir. Le concept d’une identité à explorer comme matière brute. Et c’est en se plaçant exactement sur la frontière entre la fiction et la réalité que

cette frontière s’est effacée. La métamorphose est centrale dans cette recherche expérimentale dans laquelle sont explorées différentes matières et techniques de façon à créer de multiples incarnations.

Malgré le fait qu’elle soit construite d’éléments et de médias divers appartenant à différents projets, il conviendrait de voir cette proposition d’exposition tel une entité. Tel une recherche continuelle et expérimentale.

Jot Fau is an artist of the multiple. Because of the diversity of materials and techniques she uses, but also through the development of her intimate and poetic work that reflects a fascination for the appropriation
of roles and of unknown territories. This exhibition at Brussels Art Department gathers what she calls the residues of various incarnations. This exhibition marks the 10th anniversary of a departure.

This departure was a necessity. And thus the closest I felt I could get to a concept of comfort. A necessity, but not because I was in a conflict with my surroundings, or the language I spoke. The conflict was inside

my body. As opposed to what was expected, at my adult age I hadn’t even started to accomplish a development of a me and later I realized that this development should never be seen as a completion.

Like a reptile I molt many times. Like an animal I survived by observing, by following my instinct and by constantly adapting.

More than anything I became a foreigner. A stranger at all times, but very slightly at home, regardless of the territory. The strangers’ perspective is beautiful; it is distinct and it implicates learning.

Learning languages because the language - regardless of its nature - is a bridge. Between the self and the other, between the self of today and the self of tomorrow. Learning is the essence of becoming, the

essence of being.

I developed a practice that focuses on this question of becoming. The concept of an identity one could consider as a raw material to explore. And it is by standing exactly on the border between fiction and reality

that I would like to remove that limit. The metamorphosis is central in this experimental research in which are explored different materials and techniques as to create multiple incarnations.

Although it is constructed of multiple elements and various media from different projects, we should see this proposal as an entity. As a continuous and experimental research
